■작가 노트
2021년 통계에 따르면 하루 평균 11명의 사람이 고독사로 세상을 떠났다고 한다. 그중 절반은 청년 고독사가 차지하고 있다. 살아온 날보다 살아갈 날이 더 많은 청년이 맞이하는 비극적 결말 청년 고독사. 고독사의 가장 큰 요인은 고립과 단절이다. 지금 사회의 또다른 아이러니는 각종 SNS의 발달로 소통의 수단이 많아지고 사용자도 많지만 정작 소통의 부재로 인한 사인이 늘어나고 있다는 점이다.
작가 최현정은 ‘청년’과 ‘고독사’라는 두 단어의 이질감에 주목하여 모두에게 위로와 응원을 건네고자 한다. 작업 과정에서 밝고 긍정적인 에너지를 담아내는 데에 몰두한 작가의 그림에 는 그가 마음을 쏟은 만큼의 따뜻함이 묻어나온다. 현대사회를 살아가고 있는 우리들은 누구나 저마다의 고민과 걱정을 지니고 살아가고 있다. 이번 전시 <11>을 통해 작가가 건네는 위안이 따뜻하게 전해지길 소망해 본다.
According to the statistics report in 2021, an average of 11 people per day die from what's being called as a 'lonely death'. A staggering half of these numbers come from young adults, with a vast amount of future ahead of them cut short by such tragedy. Advancements in technology has allowed humanity to find new ways to communicate and keep one company in forms of the internet and SNS, yet such statistic ironically proves otherwise for some.
Reflecting on this reality, Hyun Jung Choi focuses on the two conflicting connotations of "Young Adults" and "Lonely Death", and aims to provide hope for those who seek peace. Imbuing the works with bright and positive energy, the artist seeks to radiate warmth through the efforts in the processes. The exhibition <11> aims to give a much needed relief to the modern-day humanity with issues and problems of their own, to caress and alleviate the exhaustion and saturation of the world.
